Description: Dambusters flight experience
Take off from Peterborough Conington and fly a WW2 T6 Harvard over RAF bases and ofcourse the legendary RAF Scampton and on to the Derwent Dam & Howden Dam. Relive the Dambusters’ historic training route. A flight of 1 hour 50 minutes flying at 140 mph !!
From our base at Peterborough, you’ll take to the skies in the legendary Harvard T6 warbird, retracing one of the most iconic training routes of the Second World War. This flight package includes passes over RAF Scampton, Derwent Dam, and Howden Dam – the very places tied to the daring 1943 raid.
Your route will take you from former USAAF Glatton (now Peterborough Conington) over the wartime airfields of RAF Cranwell. Then RAF Waddington to former RAF Scampton and then direct to the Derwent dam. Once over the Derwent dam at 600 feet we then proceed down to the Ladybower reservoir and then return to base! The return leg is Sheffield and then down South to Bakewell, Matlock, Nottingham and return to Peterborough (All subject to ATC clearences)
Shortly after departure, we head north over RAF Scampton, the historic Lincolnshire airfield from which 617 Squadronlaunched their audacious mission on the night of 16–17 May 1943. Flying over Scampton offers a unique connection to the story – the place where the Dambusters began their legendary journey.
The Experience: Dambusters Flight Experience: From Scampton we continue towards the beautiful Peak District National Park, home to the Derwent and Howden reservoirs. These dams were chosen by the as the perfect training ground for low-level practice with Barnes Wallis’s revolutionary bouncing bomb.
Flying low over the dams in the Harvard, you’ll witness the same dramatic landscape where crews trained, honing their skills for Operation Chastise. The Derwent Dam, with its imposing stone towers, remains one of Britain’s most famous wartime landmarks.
The Plan: The three main targets were the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams. The Möhne dam was a curved ‘gravity’ dam and was 40m high and 650m long. There were tree-covered hills around the reservoir, but any attacking aircraft would be exposed on the immediate approach. The Eder dam was of similar construction but was an even more challenging target. Its winding reservoir was bordered by steep hills. The only way to approach would be from the north. The Sorpe was a different type of dam and had a watertight concrete core 10m wide. At each end of its reservoir the land rose steeply, and there was also a church spire in the path of the attacking aircraft.
Flying in a Harvard T6 is an adventure in itself – the roar of the engine, the feel of a classic warbird, and the thrill of low-level flying over historic landmarks. Combine that with the story of the Dambusters and you have a truly unforgettable aviation experience.
